Feedback to 「國家數位學習典藏暨新北教育雲」論壇與成果展

After reading 「國家數位學習典藏暨新北教育雲」論壇與成果展 and "10 Trends in eLearning", I found that e-leaning world is almost around the corner because of the overwhelming transformation of learning devices. As mentioned in 10 trends in e-learning, "people" is the focus of mobile learning because people on the other hand can move around to heart's content and this make mobile learning possible if with portable devices, such as laptops, tablets, cellphones, or any iDevices. If we can adjust the  learning process in more smooth and efficient ways to accelerate Ss' learning, children can really benefit from this process and adequate natural ways for them can cut ways to become success. I'm looking forward to the highly competitive and developing industry, I think I must be able to help both teachers and students to lead a better and rich world.

Date: 3/26/2012
Instructor: Chin-Wen Chien 簡靜雯
Topic: How to use email

This week we reviewed the difference between the simulation and web-quest, use the activity called "gallery walk" to invite classmates to walk and give comment to each group. Besides, we also learnt about the benefits of using email and the rule of Netiquette. What's more, i have read some content (from textbook) about the overseas Netpals by a website called ePals (I also read one article about this in 竹縣文教第42期)

Notes on ePals: 我的朋友在遠方 跨國交流在三峰

  • establish in 1996
  • for K-12
  • 200+ countries and 600 thousand users
  • users are able to contact/share/learn/collaborate
  • Tasks done at 三峰: self-introduction, habit discussion, e-Xmas card, the origin of name, school intro(all stuffs via email)
  • Benefit: practice more including 4 skills(videotaping), increase motivation, learn the format of letter/document, learn to look up dictionary on the net, learn to use DC, blogs, photo softwares, build up "portable ability", use/communicate/share/team work, gain the interest with foreign kids/cultures, active learning
  • Difficulty: time jet, internet connection, Netiquette

Result of our discussion:

The benefit of simulation
How learners cultural identify

  • Simulation is the experience of walking into the story.
  • Web-quest is the experience of reading a storybook.
  • Simulation is to experience kaleidoscopic life.
  • Web-quest is to listen to the other's narrative.

Benefits of Email
1. Keep in touch with other teachers
2. Help in professional development
3. Communicate with learners outside the
classroom
4. Learners’ exposure to the target language
5. Real language interaction
6. Simple to use

Task 1: Assess Your Abilities in Using Email

I like to use email because its convenience and efficiency. No matter when I email to others, they can check after they are available. I usually use email to inform my classmates to hand in the project, provides my students with the course notice/handout/mp3 files, and send email to teachers to interact.

Topic: Internet-based Project Work

Preview Chapter 6, How to use chat

Chat in language teaching
1. Link Ss form different countries in real time
2. Social lives + language exchange (Integrated)
3. Collaborative project work/homework/self-study activities

Types of chat
1. Test chat: ICQ/YM/MSN
2. Audio/voice chat: P2P communication (peer-to-peer), such as Skype
3. Public chat
4. Private chat: Instant Message (IM)
- chat: a tool that allow for synchronous/real-time communication over the internet
- the form of status/availability/phone texting

Educational Chats
1. Free topic chats
2. Collaborative, task-oriented chats
3. Informative/academic chats: exchange for perspectives
4. Practice chats: practice a specific function/form of language, or a specific skill or strategy

Chat Programs
- Facilities: webcam/headphone/computer/ reliable "broadband" connection/softwares/speaker/handset/microphones

Why use chat in language teaching? 5 questions on page 74
I. Does using text/video chat with learners improve their English?
- Studies to date seem to point too text chat providing opportunities for negotiating , seen as key to language acquisition by many linguists.
- Questions: doesn't follow the rule of face-to-face communication: overlapping/disjointed
- video chat is much better

II. What kind of English should learners use in chat?
- standard written English, but sometimes "abbreviated form" is more realistic
1. common abbreviation used in text chat
2. some basic rules of netiquette
3. turning taking: conventions
4. some language for specific purpose
Note: page 76

III. What technical skills do teachers and learners need to be able to use chat?
- Fact: nowadays learners are familiar with chat to communicate with family or friends
- typing ability: slower typists find it hard to contribute./typographical errors (typos)

IV. What benefits does the use of chat bring to the class?
- higher motivation to learners (maybe)
- creating variety
Reflection:
Nowadays, we focus on the "communication" of language, so we adopted "communicative approach". Communication in language teaching increasingly seemed to play a significant part. using chats can help bath students and teacher to create a more "realistic" environment for students to inquire language and to provide them opportunities of communication

V. Is it better to use text or voice chat with learners?
- text chats requires written (typed interaction), while voice chat relies on spoken interaction.
- Interactive features: whiteboard/power point/photos/video sharing
- advantages & disadvantages see page 77-78

How to start using text or voice chat with learners?
- staged approach
- real use of chat
- make clear your goals/tasks of using chats
- Invite Ss to help each other if there's any problem
- Intro/Explain/Create account: username and password/join contact list
- exchange personal information (for primary level learners)
Step 1: Install and learn to use the software
Step 2: A practice chat class: probably in pairs
Step 3: Contact with another class

還有筆記79-84還沒整理!!!

W3: Word Processors in the classroom

Multimedia in English Instructions 多媒體輔助英語教學
Date: 3/5/2012
Instructor: Chin-Wen Chien 簡靜雯
Topic: Word Processors in the classroom

Reflection 1:
This week we talked about the word processors used in the class room. Since everyone in the class know the word processors a lot, but we sometimes forgot that there are many useful tips and function 4that embedded in Microsoft office, especially the word processors. When I worked in the cram school, I started to use word processors to make many good forms for my children, such as the book lists, weekly schedules, report words and the handouts or worksheets that help Ss to practice the reading and writing skill in class. There are endless good stuffs and function in the word processors, only if teachers get accustomed to it, they can gain a lot of benefits and help students to learn better. However, I knew some other word processors like pages (on Mac) and open office (on Linux), but they are not so useful for teacher because of the file compatibility between different word files.
Besides, as I know some teachers are bothering about the compatibility between different word processor versions, like office 2003 and office 2007. Here are a reference I found on the net to get rid of this troublesome situation. (讓舊版Office可以讀寫Office 2007的docx、xlsx及pptx等格式的文件)

Task 1: Brainstorm the function that word processors can do

  • worksheet
  • mind-mapping
  • matching
  • poster
  • resume
  • mail
  • word card
  • composition
  • form
  • drawing
  • translation work
  • word puzzle
  • smart art
  • use margin to show the key points
  • color to highlight
  • Capitalization
  • cut and paste
  • pages
  • link
  • picture inserting
  • 字數統計
  • 浮水印
  • 編號庫
  • 文字藝術師
  • 注音
  • 反白
attach pieces around the classroom
some are writing skills
revising is what I'm doing in writing class
  • self-learning
  • collaboration
  • Both T and Ss see the use of the Internet as an intrinsic parts of the learning process, rather than an occasional activity.
  • It is vital that they appreciate this is a useful as well as an entertaining tool in the classroom and that it can contribute to their language development in a variety of ways, such as vocabulary building, improving listening skills.
  • For lower-level class, Ss can be engaged with visual and multi media materials. (songs, videos, pictures)

Task 2: Gallery Walk
1. Walk around the room and read through the
posters.
2. Choose 1-3 strategies you would like to
implement and jot down the information on the
note cards. Explain why and how you would like
to implement these strategies.
3. Share your ideas with your partners.

Chapter 3, Using Websites

The web is a source of content which can be used as a window on a  wider world outside your class, and is a readily available collection of authentic materials.

Using websites in the classroom
1. as printed pages, with no computers (*)
2. with one computer with an internet connection'
3. in a computer lab with a set of networked and connected computers
* Reflection: When using a Internet-based resources, it's better to have a backup plan for the unexpected accidents.

Which kinds of websites?
1. authentic websites: covering an amazing array of topics. (familiarity with convention of web design)
* fit learner's interest (keep high motivation in electric classroom)
* use easy structure and navigation website
* online dictionary assistace
2. ELT-specific websites: content designed for language learning (controlled language work)
* A well-designed task will allow your learners to deal with authentic sites, guiding them to through not only  the text, but also the layout and navigation problems that may otherwise impact on their learning experience.
* Make your tasks approachable, understandable , achievable

How to find useful websites?
1. Internet is a vast repository of Information and resources.
2. For Teacher: having good search skills=find useful resource quickly, speeding up lesson planning facilitating web use in class.
3. For Ss: Quickly accomplish web-based tasks=technology enhances learning experience
4. 3 ways
(a.) Search engines: google, yahoo, bing (keywords, phrases)
(b.) Subject guides: yahoo (category option)
(c.) Real Language searches: ask.com
(d.) Specialist sites: IMDB, Amazon, FIFA
* Keywords are good for exploring words relationships and lexical areas. Subject engines help define and refine ideas and contexts. A real search can provide useful practice in question information.
** Your choice of search facility will depend on how you like to work , and which site you find particularly attractive and useful.
***trivia quiz/short "treasure hunt": Give Ss a set of question and allow them to search for answers. (timed, improved the searching skills, p. 32)

Reflection 2:
I like to use specialist site as the reading materials for my high school students. Like the movie review from IMDB, book information from Amazon. These are good and attractive materials students are interested in and easy to adapt. Besides, some teachers use this kind of activities in junior high school. (詹麗馨老師個人網站、視力保健單元、學習單. She's one of my admirable teachers. Her diligence, teaching passion and creation are second to none.) However, this way took a lot of efforts and time to do the worksheet but Ss' outcomes and motivation are higher. In my opinion, this is what we called "portable ability. (帶得走的能力)"

Worksheet from her!
How to evaluate websites
1. The aims and objectives in your lesson
2. Enhance and complement other materials and activities you planned.
3. Types of Websites (多媒體華語教學,宋如瑜等,p. 24)
  • Tutoring
  • Drill-practice
  • Simulations
  • Tools
  • Educational games
  • Computer assisted instruction

Criteria we talked about on class

Words that I learnt from this chapter

  • intrinsic: belonging naturally; essential
  • steer clear of authentic website
  • mitigate: make (sth) less severe, violent or painful; moderate
  • impede: repair a damaged feather in (the wing or tail of a trained hawk) by attaching part of a new feather.
  • analogous: comparable in certain respects, typically in a way that makes clearer the nature of the things compared
  • trivia: comparable in certain respects, typically in a way that makes clearer the nature of the things compared

Jamie: Before making any decision in your life, no matter how small, call your wife first. Think of yourself as a brain-damaged mule, lost in a desert, helpless, dumb, and in constant need of direction. Never take the initiative, never strike out on your own, and never deviate from the plan. Why? Because you're a brain-damaged mule and you're lost in the damn desert!

Mitch Planko: Life doesn't always turn out exactly how you plan it. Sometimes, just sometimes, it turns out better.

Chapter 2, Word processors in the classroom

Who to use?
For teachers: prepare, create, store, and share materials
For Learners: practice writing skills, grammar and other language points, present work, e-profile

Skills that teachers should learn:
  • insert images and links
  • text wrapping
  • screenshot
  • creating forms (drop-down mecums, text entry fields, bottoms. making collection of basic exercise+web-based interactive materials)
  • TrackChanges: document tracking or versioning (format change, word order, deletion, inserted comments)
  • using Markin

Word processing activities for learners
1. Creative Writing :
  • Tools: dictionary, grammar, thesaurus, spelling.
  • Advantage: broaden Ls' vocabulary, more aware of errors, self-correction, the ability to model/share/produce texts, more interactive
  • Argument: encourage sloppy writing, give too much support, poor grammar and spelling
  • Suggestion: turn off spell-checker, focus  on process of writing rather than the final written product

2. Language Practice: blanks, sentence recording, adding titles to paragraphs, grammar activity
3. Noticing activity: notice the structures for younger learners
4. Dictation: Learners input(type) the text as they listen.+TrackChanges
5. Collaborative writing activity
6. Presenting work: word+power point=ePortfolio/presentation package

Notices:
1. Ss should have basic word processing and file management skills.
2. Encourage Ss to save documents in a consistent way.
3. Try to identify computer-related vocabulary that is likely occur. (understanding)

Considerations:
1. mixed technological ability
2. ***performance anxiety: not putting too much pressure on Ls to perform too quickly(Patty Hong)

Reflection:
This week we focus on finding the technologies at school. As we know, technology has been used in college for decades. Most instructors use power points or other word processing program to complete their teacher. Ss also encourage to learn this kind of skills to follow up. However, I found some of freshmen are unable to use this effectively and efficiently. This problem may be tracked back to their high school. Some high school has very few computer class, or the teacher seldom used technology as the teaching materials so that Ss are not familiar with technology. However, technology has been seen as basic skills in university.

In chapter two, we know some simple but useful ways to both teachers and learners. But there must be more accessible online resources we can used in class.

Words I learned in this Chapter:

  1. paradoxical: (a.) seemingly absurd or self-contradictory:
  2. ubiquitous: (a.) seemingly absurd or self-contradictory:
  3. envisage: (v.) contemplate or conceive of as a possibility or a desirable future event
  4. incorporate: (v.) take in or contain (something) as part of a whole; include
  5. deviate: (v.) depart from an established course
  6. transportable: (a.) able to be carried or moved
  7. necessitate: make (something) necessary as a result or consequence
  8. evocative: (a.) bringing strong images, memories, or feelings to mind
  9. motivational: (a.) the reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way

Nice quotation

Watch your habits, they become character.
Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.
