The identity of Vancouver’s famous kissing couple is revealed

In the age of Facebook and Twitter, it was only a matter of(取決於...的情況、問題或事情) time before the world learned the identities of the kissing couple from that now-iconic photo of the Vancouver riots(溫哥華暴動).

About 24 hours after photos of the smooch was passed on through emails, IMs and blog posts, the Toronto Star(多倫多明星報) and the CBC are reporting that the boyfriend and girlfriend in the photograph are Aussie(澳洲人/的) bartender(酒保) Scott Jones and Canadian college student Alex Thomas, who was injured just before the picture was taken.
The papers report that Jones and Thomas have been dating since Jones arrived in Vancouver on a "working holiday." They attended Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, which the hometown Canucks lost 4-0 to theBoston Bruins, and then somehow found themselves between the angry rioters and charging riot police later that night in downtown Vancouver.
The famous aftermath(餘波;後果), as captured by Getty Images photographer Rich Lam:
The identity of Vancouver’s famous kissing couple is revealed
So how were Jones and Thomas ultimately identified as the unlikely "make love, not war" couple of Vancouver's embarrassing night of injury and destruction?
It probably won't surprise you to learn that Facebook was involved.
Though Scott's sister Hannah first identified her brother to an Australian news network, things really started taking off(休假;脫下) when  Brett Jones, Scott's father, posted the following update on his Facebook profile on Friday morning from the family's home in Perth, Australia.
(Note the funny response from Scott's brother, Ryan.)
The identity of Vancouver’s famous kissing couple is revealed
Brett Jones now says the couple is being besieged(圍攻;包圍) by media requests from outlets around the world. All, of course, are interested in knowing the circumstances that found the couple smooching(v. 摟抱接吻) as cars were burned and windows were smashed around them.
But despite some of our initial assumptions(初步假設), the kiss seen 'round the world wasn't the product of a riot-fueled(防爆燃料), uncontrollable passion. Brett Jones instead notes that Thomas was injured and his son was coming to her aid. An alternate angle taken from above shows other bystanders later attempting to help Thomas and Jones.
Combine that different angle with Brett Jones' story and it certainly dispels(驅散) the rumors that the couple had intentionally staged(策畫;發動) the photo.
"They were between the riot police and the rioters, and the riot police were actually charging forward, and Alex got knocked by a [police] shield(盾) and fell to the ground," Brett Jones told CBC News. "[Scott] was comforting her and gave her a kiss to say, 'It's going to be OK,' and the photographer just took the shot at that moment."
Jones' mother Marie said she immediately knew it was her son in the picture because "he doesn't have a lot of clothes with him and he always puts on the same thing."
So where do they go from here? The good news is that Jones escaped the incident unhurt and Thomas only suffered a bruised leg. The bad news is that Jones is scheduled to(排定計畫要...) leave Canada soon and head home for Australia after a trip to California. The Jones family says that Thomas plans to visit California with their son but that the couple's future after that is uncertain.
UPDATE: Jones and Thomas spoke with the Toronto Star:
Thomas said this morning that everything happened so fast that there was just massive confusion all around. "I was trying to understand what was going on. The photo was definitely not something we expected to happen," said Thomas.
The couple is leaving in three days on a trip to California, before Scott heads back to Australia. Thomas said the response from her friends and family has been overwhelming.
"When I saw that picture I couldn't believe it and then I looked at it more and realize it's quite artistic and really something beautiful."

The latest new from JP

The 2011 Sendai earthquake and tsunami was an 8.9-magnitude earthquake that created tsunami waves of up to 10 metres (33 ft). It was measured at 7 on the Japan Meteorological Agency seismic intensity scale in the northern Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, while the JMA's tsunami warning listed the magnitude as 8.8. The hypocenter was reported to be off the Oshika Peninsula, the east coast of Tohoku on Friday, March 11, 2011 at 05:46 UTC (2:46 p.m. local time) at a depth of 24.4 kilometres (15.2 mi). News report by Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) indicated that 40 people have died and another 39 missing in six different prefectures.
The magnitude of 8.9 made it the largest earthquake to hit Japan in recorded history and the seventh largest in the world since records began.
JMA named this earthquake "The 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake".

Hope there will be all right in Japan and any other country all over the globe.

Men who don't ask for directions waste $3,000

(Photo: Comstock / Getty Images)
Do you already own a fuel-efficient car — that you vigilantly hypermile to save gas and money? Then I hope you know where you’re going, because driving lost in agreener car is still a big waste of fuel. In fact, you can lose about $3,000 over your lifetime by refusing to ask for directions!

That’s according to insurers Sheilas’ Wheels, which conducted a study to find that the average male driver drives 276 miles lost every year. Women, on the other hand, are more likely to stop and ask for directions — saving themselves time, gas, and money — and preventing unnecessary air pollution! The insurance company hired an independent research company to survey 1,000 motorists.
The study found that 26% of men wait at least 30 minutes before asking for directions, with 12% refusing to ask for help. Seventy-four percent of women are fine with asking directions; 37% say they pull over as soon as they realize they are lost.

When I first read about this study, I had this feeling some men would find perfectly “logical” reasons why they should not ask for directions despite clear financial and environmental reasons for doing so. I wasn’t disappointed. GOOD’s web editor Andrew Price came through for me by claiming that even when he doesn’t know where he’s going, he’s not actually lost. How’s that? “It’s reductive to think there are just two states: ‘lost’ and ‘not lost,’ ” is the rationale Andrew comes up with:

When I have opted to feel out directions rather than ask or try to get somewhere on memory and intuition, it’s usually because I had a good idea of where I was going without knowing exactly whether the next turn is supposed to be before or after the underpass.
If you run across Andrew on his 276-mile, lost-but-not-lost “memory and intuition” detour this year, please point him in the right direction.

Funny stereotypes aside, women drivers who don't ask for directions will obviously also end up wasting just as much time, money, and gas as their male counterparts. According to the study, women drive about 256 miles a year when lost. Those 20 miles may not seem like much, but over a lifetime they can really add up.

The bottom line: Ask for directions -- or if you have a GPS, use it!

Question: My kids just started school, and I’m not looking forward to playing taxi driver.

Got any tips to help me save gas when I’m dashing from ballet to baseball to the house several times a week?
My car has seen better days, and we don’t plan to upgrade anytime soon.

Answer: Shuttling kids around to extracurricular events can be pretty taxing on car engines, as well as the calendar tool on your PDA. With gas prices inching up, it pays to try a few of these tips once the school bell rings.

Create a game plan: Map out your route the night before. This will help you determine shortcuts, and maximize the trip. Of course, having kids guarantees there will be an impromptu detour for two dozen birthday cupcakes or some other last-minute emergency, but a good game plan is your best defense against wasted gas.

If a ballet session is near the grocery store, check your shopping list for any items that may need to be picked up. (I always stock up on toilet paper and other necessities that I’d hate to be without.) If you have an iPhone or iPad, it also helps to sign up for free apps like Around Me that locate nearby businesses and note the driving distance.

Power of the pack: It pays to make friends during the extra innings of your kids’ baseball games. You just may find a neighbor who can split driving duties.

Lighten your load: Before the school year gets into full gear, take time to clean out your car. Remove all remnants of the summer, such as the beach gear, coolers, and other nonessentials that weigh down your car.

All that excess gear can reduce your mileage. According toFueleconomy.gov, an extra 100 pounds of stuff can reduce your car’s mileage by 3 to 5 cents per gallon.

Reduce drag: If you have gear on the roof of your car, it’s time to streamline. My friend even lowers the tailgate of his truck to save a few precious drops each trip. Hey, every bit helps!

Watch your tires: The "penny test" is a tried-and-true measure of tire wear. Grab Lincoln and make sure your tire’s tread reaches the top of his head — that distance of about 2/32” is the minimum tread requirement in many states.

It also pays to invest in a tire pressure gauge. For less than $10, this handy pen-size tool will help ensure that your tires are properly inflated. An over- or underinflated tire can affect gas mileage, so know your numbers and check those tires regularly.

Keeping tires properly inflated should be easier if you have a late-model vehicle. After the Bridgestone/Firestone tire failures on Ford Explorers, the government required all vehicles to be equipped with Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems starting with 2008 model year vehicles. Look for theodd icon with the exclamation mark on your dashboard.

Easy does it: I’ll admit that this one is difficult for me, but maintaining a smooth ride that’s free of lots of herky-jerky braking and accelerating also saves gas. Load a kid-friendly DVD in the back or have the little ones read a book so you aren’t distracted during those scheduled runs. This also helps extend life of your car’s engine, brakes and tires.

Skip the premium: Unless your car specifically requires the good stuff, Consumer Reports studies show that regular petrol gets the job done just as well, so save your money.

Get a good warm-up: Resist the urge to jump in your ride and go. Forcing a cold engine to work overtime can waste gas. Let the car warm up before hitting the road.

Avoid idling: Go ahead and make the most of each minute spent in the carpool lane or waiting for your kid to load up the gear. But allowing your car to idle for more than 30 seconds means that you are getting exactly 0 miles per gallon of gas.

Cut the engine off as your tykes slowly meander toward the car after practice. Spend those precious moments channeling that happy place, otherwise known as the kids’ bedtime.
