Cooperative Learning

Background
Cooperative or collaborative learning involves Ss learn from each other in group together.
Group configuration
Ts teach Ss to collaborative or social skills so that they can work together more effectively.( Jacob 1998)

Experience
You will work together to learn the new vocabulary.
T circulates among the groups, but doesn't say anything.

Principles
Ss are encouraged to think in terns of positive interdependence.
Ss often stay toghther in the same groups for a period of time so they can learn how to work better and get along with others together.
Groups are mixed: males and females, different ethnic groups, or different proficiency levels.
Give the criteria to Ss.
Social skills such as acknowledging another's contribution, asking others to contribute, and keeping the conversation calm need to be explicitly taught.
Language acquisition is facilitated by Ss interacting in TL.
Responsibility and accountability is shared.
