Background
Cognitive Approach, early 1970s
Perception, 1975, Rubin, facilitate learning, "the techniques or devices which a learner may use to acquire knowledge."
Good learners needed training in learning strategies. (Wende 1985)
Training Ss in the use of learning strategies in order to improve their learning effectiveness.

Experience
Read the Ss' learning journals
Advance organization
Preview, skim, think-aloud technique
Skip those you don't know e meaning of. Don't use your dictionaries.
Make predictions
Write about experience in your learning journals.

Principles
Ss' prior knowledge and learning experience should be valued and built upon.
Studying certain learning strategies will contribute to academic success.
Teach not only language bur also learning.
Modify the strategy to meet their own learning needs. Hand-on experience is the best way.
Learning strategy fits content-based instruction. Strategy should not be taught in isolation, but rather as part of the content-area or language curriculum.(Grabe and Stoller 1997)
An added benefit of learning strategy training is that it can help learners to continue to learn after they have completed their formal study of target language.
Metacognitive strategies are used to plan, monitor, evaluate a learning task by Chamot and O'Malley in 1994. Examples: arrange the conditions, set long and short goals, and check comprehension during listening or reading.
The other category is social/affective stratgies where learners intact with other persons or use affective control to assist learning. Examples: create situations and practice TL with others, use self-talk, and cooperate with others to share information, otain feedback, as well as complete a task.
